Finding a Missing Military Friend/Family Member If you are trying to locate a missing friend in the military, here are some tips of where to find help in publications, on the Internet and via mail and telephone.
Military publications can help. Several military publications regularly publish ads by military people looking to get in touch with others they have served with. Find a list of military publications such as "Military Matters" and "Leatherneck Magazine" at world-newspapers.com.
Military Web sites to check out:
- directory.google.com: for military reunions
- military.com: search more than 20 million records to find your military buddy
- amervets.com: will link you to The American Heroes Personnel Registry, which contains more than 22 million listings from the Revolutionary War through today. New listings are added daily and existing listings are continuously updated. To help your search, you may place a military photo on this registry.
- dtic.mil/dpmo: Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office. Click on FAQ to find out the resources this site will offer families of missing military personnel
- defenselink.mil: Department of Defense locator service. It will increase your chance of a successful search to know the person's full name, rank, last duty assignment/last known military address and social security number. Free to immediate family members and government officials: The cost is $3.50 for everyone else.
To write or call:
- The United States Army will help you locate individuals on active duty only. Mail your request to: Commander, U.S. Army Enlisted Records & Evaluation Center, ATTN: locator, 8899 East 56th Street, Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN 46249-5301 or call 1-866-771-6357
- The Navy's locator service helps locate individuals on active duty and those whose service ended less than a year ago. In addition, the Navy will forward letters as long as the correct postage is affixed to the envelope. Unless you are active military, local or federal government, or a family member, the fee for researching an address is $3.50 per address. Write to: World Wide Locator, Bureau of Naval Personnel, PERS 312F, 5720 Integrity Drive, Millington, TN 38055-3120 or call 1-901-874-3388
- The Air Force can locate active duty personnel, as well as retirees, reservists and guardsmen. This information is not available for those who have separated from the Air Force or are Army Air Corps retirees. Information on individuals stationed overseas or in a sensitive position will not be released. However, the locator service will forward mail to that person for up to 90 days, as long as the correct postage is on the envelope and any required fee has been paid. Write to: HQ AFMPC/RMIQL, 550 C Street, West, Suite 50, Randolph AFB, TX 78150-4752 or parents, spouses, and government officials may call 1-210-652-5774 for a recorded message or 1-210-652-5775 for non-recorded service
Of course, if none of these avenues help you find your military friend or family member, you can always use a service, like Veromi, to help locate your loved one.
