Background Check Tips for Small Business Owners If you are a small business owner, you likely wear many hats and juggle countless tasks through the course of a year. Though you may not feel you can take on another task, it is to your benefit to add "working knowledge of the many laws involved in being an employer" to your plate. Here are some background check tips for small business owners, courtesy of privacyrights.org, a nonprofit consumer information and advocacy organization:
- Educate yourself: it's in your best interest and your company's to know employment laws. Look at government agency websites to get started.
- Seek free advice: organizations such as the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and the Small Business Association can help. Follow the links on their websites to other information and use the contact section to ask questions.
- Join local business groups: this is a good way to share information with fellow small business owners
- Be smart when hiring a background checking company: make sure the company you hire follows the FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act) and applicable state laws
- Remember that when you are checking public records through an online company, usually the
more jurisdictions you check, the greater the cost.
